What is the Doctor of Psychology about?

Our part-time Doctor of Psychology is aimed at master’s graduates who want to further develop their scientific skills in the field of psychology at the highest academic level.

You will obtain your doctorate through an independent research or innovative academic project (doctoral thesis). Throughout your entire research process, you will be supported individually and professionally by top-class supervisors.

The aim of the course is to successfully complete a doctoral thesis.

Thanks to the flexible design options and regular professional exchange with your personal supervisor, you can continue your professional career even during your studies. You can obtain the D.Psych. practically “on the side”.

Our D.Psych. is an internationally recognized degree after a doctoral program of at least three years at the 3rd level of the Bologna classification (level 8 MQF/EQR). Please note that our doctorate is an academic degree program that does not necessarily lead to a professional warrant for psychologists in Europe so we recommend you check with the respective psychology professions board of your respective countries before applying.

Recognition and Accreditation of the Study Programme

Curriculum and course of study in the Doctor of Psychology (D.Psych.)

The Doctor of Psychology (D.Psych.) program is strongly application-oriented and provides you with methodological skills for practice as well as for research. You complete the program with a doctoral thesis.

The D.Psych. degree program is designed for three years (6 semesters) and has six taught modules.

Expert lecturers guide you at all times during your doctoral process: from the step-by-step planning and development of your research project to the final implementation of your dissertation.

Your modules in the Doctor of Psychology (D.Psych)

A research-focused doctorate in psychology provides a solid foundation for applying your expertise in a real-world setting. This level 8 program will also provide you the necessary skills, knowledge and competence in comprehensively applying what you have learnt throughout your research in a more down-to-earth context. Obtaining a D.Psych also means that you have contributed extensively to and existing knowledge by conducting primary research in a specific context

During your doctorate, you will complete six modules one after the other, which you will complete with your doctoral thesis.

Module 1: Practice-based Advanced Research in Psychology

In practice-based research, the focus is on your professional practice. You actively reflect on how this changes through the doctoral process.

This module focuses on teaching the unique characteristics of a research- based doctorate twhich enables practice-oriented scholarly research. To do this, you will learn the basic scientific principles of evidence-based practice. You will develop yourself into a confident and reflective practitioner and researcher and be able to respond to social, scientific and ethical challenges on the basis of sound scientific research.

The research approaches in this module include experimental and correlational approaches, field study research, practitioner research, and specific research paradigms in psychology, such as case studies, feasability studies, and process research.

Module 2: Advanced Theories and Current Research in Psychology

This module will provide you with advanced knowledge and skills to comprehensively and critically understand current psychological research, including systematic application of advanced theories and debates in the field at doctoral level. The module will also address controversies in the classification, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. The main arguments and discussions to be developed during this module will relate to the following topics:

Module 3: Advanced Qualitative Research Methods in Applied Psychology

This module focuses on qualitative research methodology. This means that you will acquire advanced knowledge in planning an empirical study and interpreting, evaluating and summarizing the resulting findings. Theoretical questions are discussed in connection with the planning and analysis of qualitative empirical studies in psychology. You will also gain in-depth knowledge of qualitative research characteristics such as the development of qualitative research questions, data and source triangulation, reflexivity and holistic phenomenological approaches.

Module 4: Advanced Quantitative Research Methods in Applied Psychology

This module aims to teach you quantitative research methods at doctoral level.

This includes:

  • generation of hypotheses
  • Creation of research designs (e.g. post- and pre-post designs)
  • validity and reliability
  • data collection methods (e.g. questionnaires, observation plans)
  • Basic and advanced data analysis using software such as R or SPSS
  • Calculating descriptive statistics and creating diagrams

Module 5: Reflexivity in Action

This module offers you the opportunity to reflect on your progress during your studies in the field of psychology. The milestones achieved in the doctoral program are recorded in reflective reports. The module focuses on the experiences in research groups and documents changes in thinking and practice in order to illustrate your individual development. The module also includes the creation of your own pilot study in psychology to give you even more practical experience and reflection on the research process and study design.

To support this, you will work with case studies (real cases).

Module 6: Doctoral Thesis in Psychology

In the final phase of your studies, you will focus on writing your doctoral thesis . To receive professional support, you will regularly attend supervision sessions and tutorials . You will receive detailed advice on your research direction and the form and content of your dissertation. This will enable you to conduct your own research and write your doctor thesis on time.

As part of your D.SPych, you will conduct a novel research project in the field of psychology by collecting, analyzing and interpreting data at doctoral level. The topic of the work can be practical, theoretical, technical or historical . Your doctorate can be career-oriented and include fieldwork. You also have the opportunity to make it academic and theoretical in terms of source material and methodology.

You can develop your topic independently or optionally within the framework of a specific dissertation interest or specialist group.

For the D.Psych. you need an academic degree at level 7 (Master or equivalent) in psychology or a related subject. Initial professional experience in the field of psychology of around two years is considered as an advantage.

Admission requirements

Candidates must have the ability and opportunity to carry out detailed research activity in one or more organisations. Candidates will normally have already gained an MBA or other business-related master’s degree, together with 2-3 years of business and management experience. Candidates are required to submit a 3000 word proposal and successfully pass a panel interview. They have to demonstrate the capability for doing independent research at level 8 MQF.

Students must produce evidence of English language proficiency at IELTS:6.0 or equivalents with a minimum of 5 in each component or English B2 referred to CEFR.

In brief prospective students :

Tuition Fees and Financing

The monthly tuition fees are €530 (36 installments) for a period of 3 years plus a one-time registration fee of €450 and a one-time examination fee of €450 for written registration of the doctoral thesis. The tuition fees for each additional semester are €3,180. Payment can be made monthly or semester-by-semester.
